" As an only child, of a controlling southern baptist mom, and I am now 48 years old ( with a gay son, who has a boyfriend that lives in New Zealand, but stayed with us recently), I can sympathize with you. I really wish that I had a mom like me when I was younger. I was told what to do and when to do it until I got married (at age 24), gave birth when I was 26 and even then, when my son was 8 years old and he blabbed that I drank wine, my mom would come over to MY HOUSE and pour it out. (I am not an alcoholic, just a "weekend wine drinker) - I really was mad at the time. I thought that was the most horrible thing in the world. I lost my mom 10 years ago, and I miss her more than I can say here and would give all my possessions to get her back for even just 5 minutes. This "controlling / overprotectiveness" will pass,as you get married and then have kids. You will (hopefully) look back and see that your mom loved you and she thought that she had your best interests at heart, even though it might not seem like it now to you. You never know when your mom will pass away. Put up with it, keep your secrets to yourself and give her a hug...while you still can."

"You should really try and sit down and talk it out with her. Let her know that it's straining your relationship with her and that you feel smothered. You needed your freedom and that's part of why you moved out, right? Just let her know that if she doesn't cool down, you'll just have to make some distance. Maybe you should let the voicemail pick up nine times out of the ten that she calls. She will be hurt, there's no way around it. You will always be her daughter, if not her little girl. She's going to get the picture eventually, but there needs to be some gentle (or not so gentle) pushing to get it going. But be direct, don't resort to trafficking through dad like she did.
